Energy Skills Centre is officially unveiled

A new Energy Skills Centre at East Coast College which will help the region stay at the forefront of the UK’s growing energy and engineering industries has been officially opened.

Based at the Lowestoft campus of East Coast College, the state-of-the-art centre will become home to the innovative East Coast Energy Training Academy.

Supported by £10m from New Anglia LEP, it will combine cutting-edge technology and state-of-the-art facilities to support the development of higher-level technical skills and expertise in the energy, maritime and engineering sectors.

As a regional centre of excellence with national and international specialisms, it will support the development of higher-level technical skills and professional expertise, specifically in the energy, engineering, maritime and offshore industries.

The facility was officially opened on Tuesday 12 November by Stuart Rimmer, chief executive of East Coast College, Jasmine Allen, a former student and now an apprentice with SSE Renewables, and Chris Starkie, chief executive of New Anglia LEP.

Mr Starkie said: “The energy sector is a key priority for the region’s growth and this facility stands to play a significant role in that by providing appropriately trained and qualified people to support this agenda.

“It is designed to meet the needs of the energy, engineering and maritime sectors and will provide clear progressions from Level 3 through to higher level study programmes and apprenticeships. Companies looking to upskill and develop their employees’ technical and managerial competencies and qualifications will also be able to sign up to take courses here.”
