With the lack of public toilet facilities in the Dereham and many comments about this on social media, the community decided to do something about it. The team created a leaflet, outlining places in town for the public to use facilities, as a way of extra customer service to local residents and visitors.
The ‘Spend a Penny’ scheme, spearheaded by voluntary group About Dereham, encourages businesses and organisations to open their facilities to the public.
Thanks to a small grant from Norfolk County Council’s ‘Love Your Market Town’ scheme, in partnership with Breckland Council, a handy leaflet with a map showing where you can find facilities such as toilets, baby change, accessible loos, seating, refreshments and a place to sit out of the weather. And to encourage more cycling, bike racks are now added.
This initiative aims to provide more convenient access to toilets and encourage people to spend more time in the town centre. Participating locations display a large penny sign in their window.
The project has been delivered and will be ongoing.
