Background
The trail was developed to link ten significant landmarks in Swaffham, such as the Buttercross, Assembly Rooms, St Peter & St Paul’s Church, and the iconic Pedlar sign. It weaves together the town’s history, architecture, and legends, offering an engaging way for residents and visitors to explore Swaffham year-round.
How it works? The free Swaffham Market Town Trail explores the town’s 800-year history and seeks to help attract more visitors while celebrating its heritage. The physical booklet yields a commemorative tote bag.
Highlights of the trail and self-guided walk include:
- The Buttercross: An 18th-century domed structure topped with a statue of Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture.
- St Peter and St Paul’s Church: A 15th-century church featuring a double hammer-beam roof with nearly 200 carved angels and historical carvings of the legendary Pedlar of Swaffham.
Museum of Swaffham: Located on London Street, this serves as the starting or stopping point where you can grab the trail guide and delve deeper into local history.
